“You are beautiful.”

He blurted this out. His eyes sappy and looking for answers in her entrancing face. The bus was filling up with passengers and he knew he had to say it before everyone else hears him.

She looked up at him and looked around. Clearly, he was talking to her.

“Excuse me?” she looked nervous.

“I said, you’re beautiful.”

She started laughing, unsure of what to say. The familiar chatter of people on that early morning bus ride grew louder. She fidgeted in her seat and gripped her handbag closer to her.

“You are the most beautiful woman on this bus. I am sure the most beautiful in the neighborhood. No, I am sorry. You are the most beautiful woman I have ever laid eyes on anywhere on this planet.”

She turned to him and grinned.

“We have been married for 35 years. I never knew I charmed you this way, sweetheart.”

He kissed her forehead. He leaned back in his seat and smiled.
